The cap can grow from 1-4” across. With a convex shape, slightly flattening with age yet keeping a pronounced umbo. It has a smooth surface that is viscous when wet, with a separatable pellicle. It has a brown chestnut color & is hygrophanous, producing a striated shading which fades to a light straw color. It bruises bluish black. The gills are brown, often darkening with age, with light to white edges. It can grow 4-8” tall & 0.2” thick. The stipe is white to brown in color and at the base there is often, rhizomorphic mycelium. Found in pockets of the Western coastal areas of US. It prefers sandy coastal soils associated with wood chips. Found from California to Oregon around late Oct to Feb. With up a tryptamine range of ~1-3% in dried specimens. Lookalikes Galerina marginata
